How it works in a group

The app reads a statement. Everyone who has done it says so — hands up, or fingers down if you are playing the counting version. Then, and this is the part people skip, somebody tells the story.

Without the story it is a survey. With it, a round takes twenty minutes and you learn things about people you have known for years. The best statements are written so that a raised hand demands an explanation.

What makes a good statement

The split matters more than the content. If everyone has done it, nothing happens. If nobody has, nothing happens either. The ones worth playing land somewhere around a third to two thirds of the room.

That is why the statements here lean towards ordinary mishaps rather than dramatic confessions. Waving at someone who was waving past you, giving directions somewhere you have never been, rehearsing a phone call before making it — these get hands up and get people talking, which extravagant claims do not.

Set the intensity low with a group that has just met. Icebreakers stay away from anything personal, which is exactly what you want before people have decided how honest they are willing to be.

Group size

Three works. Eight is better. Past about twelve the pace drops, because every statement produces too many stories and the phone spends its life being passed.

For bigger groups, split into two and run separate rounds. Everyone gets more airtime, and you can compare notes afterwards.
