Truth or Dare, online and free

One person is up. They choose Truth or Dare, and the app deals a card of that type. They answer or perform, then the turn passes.

The only rule worth adding is a pass rule: agree up front that anyone can skip a card without explaining why. Counter-intuitively, this makes people bolder rather than more cautious — knowing there is an exit is what makes the bold cards playable.

Skipping does not pass your turn. You still owe the group an answer, so you get another card. That stops one person skipping their way through the whole round.

The slider runs from gentle to spicy. Gentle is safe in front of anyone — comfort food, first jobs, worst haircuts. Spicy is flirty and bold, but never explicit at any setting.

Start lower than you think you want. A round that warms up beats one that opens too hot and makes someone quiet for ten minutes. You can move the slider mid-game; it applies from the next card onwards.

The categories matter as much as the intensity. Icebreakers are safe with people you have just met. Deep is for people you already trust. Funny works with anyone and is the right default if you are unsure.

Truth or Dare is at its best when there is a lull and nobody wants to be the one to suggest something. It removes the awkwardness of proposing an activity, because the game proposes it for you.

It works on a sofa with one other person, in a car on a long drive, at a table after a meal when the conversation has run out, and on a video call with someone in another timezone. It does not work well as background — it needs everyone actually paying attention, which is most of the point.

Twenty cards takes roughly twenty minutes with two people and considerably longer with six, because the good answers spawn tangents. Set the round to ten if you want something short, or endless if you would rather stop when it stops being fun.

Most question lists online are optimised for length rather than quality, which is why so many of them ask about your biggest fear and your dream holiday. Those produce one-word answers and a pause.

Every question here is written and then checked against one test: would two real people have a better evening because of this card? Anything that produces a shrug gets cut, and a large share of drafted questions do not survive that. What remains is smaller than a scraped list and considerably more useful.

Dares get the same treatment. Every one is performable in the room you are already in, needs no props, involves nobody outside the game, and leaves nothing behind — nothing gets posted, sent, or recorded. A five-second decision should not have consequences you are still explaining next week.
