Would You Rather is the one that survives a group splitting into side conversations, because two people can carry on arguing about a card while everyone else moves on.

Truth or Dare is the boldest and wants a smaller, closer group. It works badly with twelve people and very well with five.

Keeping it good-natured

Everything here is written to tease rather than wound. The higher settings get personal — who still has feelings for an ex, who has a secret account — but no card asks anyone to embarrass a person who is not playing.

Agree a pass rule out loud before you start. Anyone can skip anything without giving a reason. It sounds like it would make the game tamer and it reliably does the opposite — people attempt bolder cards once they know there is a way out of any of them.

The other thing worth doing is starting lower than the room thinks it wants. A party that warms up over twenty minutes stays good all evening; one that opens at maximum intensity tends to produce a lot of laughter and then a lull nobody can explain.

What group size works best for these?

Two to twelve. It is loudest with four or more, because the pointing is the game — but it works with two, and the couples questions are written for that. Above twelve the phone spends too long being passed, so splitting into two groups is better.

Do we need to download anything?

No. It runs in a browser on one phone. You can add it to your home screen if you want it to open like an app, but that is optional and it works either way.

Is it suitable for a mixed group?

Yes, at a lower intensity. Nothing is explicit at any setting, and the categories let you keep it away from anything personal. For a group where not everyone knows each other, start with icebreakers.
